Free Computers: A Good Thing?

by Bill Konertz
You can't turn around these days without reading about computers being given away.
At Quid'·nunc, we like our customers too much to do that. Why buy a computer from Quid' ·nunc? Four good reasons: quality, warranty, service and price.
Quid'·nunc quality begins with the parts we use in our computers. Every component we use has been discussed, tested and passed by the technicians (we call 'em "techs," mostly because it sounds cool) who build the computer you'll buy. And then we keep looking at those parts; if we find a better one, we use that one.
Our parts are names that computer professionals all regard as the best you can buy. A Quid'·nunc-built computer will include parts from manufacturers like Sound Blaster, ATI, Western Digital, Asus, Premio, Supra, 3Com, voodoo, AND, Intel and US Robotics. You'll see their names on the price quote we give you, because we're proud of the components we use.

Built For Reliability

Anyone can build an inexpensive computer. A Quid'·nunc computer is reliable, which we think is much more important. For example, we don't use motherboards with built-in video cards, sound cards and modems, even though they cost less. Our experience has shown them to be less reliable and more difficult to upgrade. Our goal is to send you home with your new computer and never have to bring it back for repairs. That may make us the one place that actually tries to avoid making work for its tech staff.
The computers sold by Quid'·nunc are built by Quid'·nunc techs at Quid'· nunc. The operating system and any other software delivered with your computer is installed by Quid'·nunc techs and then checked by Quid'· nunc techs to ensure it runs properly. In fact, we run it for 24 hours, testing each component over and over again. Even the best manufacturer can produce a bad part, we catch most of this limited number before they get out the door.

When Bad Things Happen To Good Computers (And The People Who Buy Them)

We don't catch everything. And we're human. But if you find yourself facing the unusual circumstance of having bought a computer with a problem, you're covered by our 2-year warranty. We can't be more straightforward than that. If you're thinking about buying a computer, we urge you to get a copy of our warranty and check it out. Compare it to any other computer manufacturer or computer store. You'll begin to see how much Quid'·nunc stands behind its computers.

Fast Service

Ain't nobody perfect, and as hard as we try to prevent it, sometimes things happen after our computers leave the store. Whatever it is, our service department can handle it.
Sometimes the problem can be resolved over the telephone, and our A+-certified techs are just the folks to do it. But if the problem requires you to bring in your Quid'·nunc-built computer, you'll appreciate our priority service. Quid'·nunc computers are always next on the bench. That priority treatment means that often we can get your computer back to you on the same day, sometimes within an hour, and, not so infrequently, while you wait. We can do this because we maintain a stock of replacement parts. No reason for your computer's downtime to cost you.

The Price Is Right

My first job was stocking shelves for the grocer across the street from my childhood home. Its owner, Ed, had posted a sign above the meat case:
"I don't have any quarrel with those who sell for less. They ought to know what their stuff is worth."
We know what our stuff is worth, and we charge a very fair price. For that price, you get an exceptional computer and a piece of Quid'·nunc with its reputation for top-quality workmanship and exceptional customer service.

Back To School

It's that time of year again. Pool parties and pickup baseball games are being replaced by study sessions and math drills.
There's lots of computer software that can prepare your child for the coming year and keep him or her sharp throughout the year.
For starters, there's Math Blaster and Reading Blaster, both excellent programs that make learning fun. Also Jump Starts for all ages, from toddler up to 6th grade.
A computer in the house is a great tool for education. But a computer without the right software is like a pencil without lead. Stop by soon and pick up the software your child needs.

Herc A Hit At Street Festival

Those of you who stopped by the West Seattle Street Festival were greeted by a full-sized Herc from Star Siege. Unlike his more belligerent game compatriots, however, ours -- named Junior, by the way, and built by customers Paul and Heather Callin -- shot styrofoam antenna balls at the crowd in front of the Quid'·nunc booth.
While the antenna balls were cool enough -- isn't it fun explaining that Quid'·nunc isn't Jack In The Box, -- many lucky recipients won prizes etched onto the balls.
Twenty lucky recipients won a copy of StarSiege itself
Others won prizes from local businesses, including Elliott Bay Brewery, La Louisianne, Leisure Books, Ground Zero and Next To Nature.
As usual, we had great fun meeting with visitors to our displays and demonstrating the many products and services we offer.
We hope to see you again next year -- with an even cooler event!

Street Festival Sales Continue

Did you ever get so excited about an event that you went overboard? Packed too many clothes, ate too many cookies, grilled too many hamburgers, bought too many books?
We did that, too. We were so excited about the West Seattle Street Festival that we ordered like there was no tomorrow.
Except we forgot that the Street Festival is only a four-day event.
So we still have some great software and peripherals available at outstanding prices.
For example, Men In Black, a steal at just $14.95.
And the popular software title Shadow Warrior, $9.95, which is probably so sought-after because we cornered the market.
Drop by the store (or check the
Website) and see what we have for you.

Graphics User Group Coming

One thing about the folks who visit and work at Quid'·nunc: They're excited about the latest technology. The only difference is our level of knowledge. That's why Don Murphy has agreed to lead an informal user group based around the things you can do graphically with your computer.
Whether it's 3D, movie-making, or photos... whether Windows or Macintosh... this will be a great place to meet with others with your interests and learn from each other. Just get in touch with Don at (206) 937-5164 or by E-mail at
murphydonj@yahoo.com -- and let us know what would be great to include.

Hey, Mac Arena

John Hendow, our Mac guru for some time, has gotten so busy between his classwork, his band (Jumbalassy) and his day job ("Code Druid," reads his card from Bulldog Beach, where he creates Web pages) that he just can't spare us any more time.
Luckily, we can call on Edgars Klepers and Dema Poppa to fill John's shoes. Edgars will answer Mac questions; Dema is your all-around helpful-behind-the-counter -and-on-the-floor guy.
Now all we need is to find a cool job title for them. Code Druid" is hard to beat

A+ Certification

When you were in school, your parents probably tried to instill upon you the importance of getting good grades.
As adults, it's just as important. That's why we're securing A+ certification for all of our technicians. An A+ certification is given by the Computing Technology Industry Association to any computer technician that has completed its coursework and passed a written and bench test demonstrating proficiency with computers.
All of our techs are terrific. They know computers inside and out. (They'll even tell you how good they are.)
Now we're just getting the paperwork that shows it.
So from now on, you can be sure that when you bring your computer into Quid'.nunc, you've got a tech working on it who has achieved a level of certification that few people have. And they'll have the grade to prove it: A+
