Register For Your Gifts
At Quid'· nunc

by Bill Hibler

Remember what it was like to get what you wanted for Christmas back in the old days? You had to leave the Sears catalog open to the page you wanted. You had to enlist friends and relations to drop hints for you. You would sneak into Mom and Dad's room and whisper to them in your sleep.

But it's the modern era now. The cusp of a new millennium.

And now there's a new way to get the computer gifts you want: the Quid'·nunc Gift Registry File Box. Sure, it's analog technology, but it works.

Just stop by the store to register. We'll hand you an index card on which you should write some simple information: Who you are, what kind of computer you're using, which operating system you're running, what some of your peripherals are.

Then just write down your holiday wants, whether software (games, clip art, tax software, operating systems... anything), peripherals (all add-one to your computer: drives, memory chips, scanners, accelerators and more), accessories (mouse pads, disks and more), publications (books, guides, magazines), even systems (with the chip and components you want).

Then, when someone you know comes in, we'll hand them the card. Your friend will see what you want; when something is bought, we'll cross it off the list.

(By the way, once you've filled out your card, we won't show it to you until after December 25.

After all, we don't want to spoil your surprise.)

Can't get to the store? No problem. You can E-mail your list to us; we'll store it. And your gift-giver can call to ask what you're hoping for. We'll even process a purchase via E-mail; your gift-giver need only provide us with his or her Visa or MasterCard, and we'll hold the item until he or she -- or you -- can come in and pick it up.

We make it easy for your friends and family to know to shop here, too. just send us the E-mail address of the folks you'd like to notify, and we'll send a brief message telling them to stop by Quid'·nunc if they're stumped for a gift for you.

The Quid'·nunc Holiday Gift Registry. One great way to make sure you --and the ones you love -- get what they want for Christmas. (Oh yes -- keep your eye out for our Internet version. After all, we are a computer store!) Q

How To Give
Good Gift

We have the perfect gift for everybody you know with a computer and a brain

Want to make holiday gift-giving an easy thing to do? Come to Quid'·nunc, where we have the perfect gift for everybody you know with a computer and a brain.

For example, start with our great collection, Totally Mad. It's a seven-CD-ROM set with the complete archives from Mad magazine since its first issue in 1952. Everyone from Harvey Kurtzman to Don Martin to Sergio Aragones is here, with all the bits you loved, and many more of the ones you've missed.

Mouse For The House?

One cool new toy is Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer, the great new mouse that works, not by trackball, but by light beam. It works on any surface with just a small amount of detail... plastic, wood, even your pant leg. You won't have to pry it open to dig the sludge out of its rollers. It's got a limited lifetime hardware warranty. The best part is our price --$64.95, the same as Costco, without having to play bumpercar in its parking lot.

Even if they work in squalor, your loved ones can dress up their desk with the Pure Expressions leather mousepad made of genuine top grain leather. If that's too fancy, we have the usual assortment of desktop dresser-uppers, including mousepads featuring Escher designs... fine art designs... Poke'mon... the really cool audio mousepad (it lets you relax to the sounds of the seashore or wolves)... even a make-your-own mousepad kit... or, for your friends who are constantly at their computers: Gel wrist rests for either the mouse or the keyboard. Either way, the support that wrists will get may just save your loved one from months or even a lifetime of pain.

Finally, consider the gift of a keyboard drawer. Most desk surfaces are too high to comfortably -- and, more important, healthily -- type on a keyboard. One of our inexpensive keyboard drawers gets keys at the right level -- and our vote for a nifty computer accessory.

Picture These Gifts

The future is all about multimedia. Mixing images, text and sound, on the Web and elsewhere. Odds are you know someone who thinks this way already, and is just short the equipment. A scanner is the perfect gift for this person -- and they're available at great prices all throughout the holiday season here at Quid'·nunc. We'll hook you up with the perfect tool for putting strange and beautiful images on Websites and school projects.

Don't forget the Internet. Whether for research, entertainment, E-mail, downloading MP3 sound files or live-time gameplaying, everybody is finding he needs something on the Internet. Think how much someone you know will appreciate a gift subscription to the Internet. It starts at only $19.95 a month. Multiple-month subscriptions come with further discounts. And Quid'·nunc's ISP service is DSL-friendly, which is fast and more secure Or credit card transactions and other sensitive data.

Play This

Know someone who uses his computer for racecar games? Then perhaps the coolest gift you can buy him is the Saitek R100 racecar steering wheel and pedal kit. It turns any computer -- Windows or Macintosh -- into a real-feeling race car, complete with gearshift pedals. Fire buttons, too: you just never know when you have to release a cruise missile or two.

Board game fans will love the improved gameplaying experience computers give. Even such classic games as Monopoly and Scrabble have been enhanced. The new version of Monopoly lets you create your own board. Use one of the ten city editions packaged with it (including Seattle), or use dip art to create a board based on your neighborhood, your relatives... anything you can scan in (remember, we've got great scanners for sale, too). There's live-action 3D play, even... what could be cooler than watching the top hat zip around the board?

The new version of Scrabble includes multiple levels, popup guides, and a customizable- dictionary (we've put "Quid'·nunc" in ours, even though it technically shouldn't count). There's advice, too; you can see the ten best plays you can make.

Intense

Today's games are so graphic-intensive that the hardware to display them at maximum benefit is always at the cutting edge. If you know a game phreak who needs the ultimate interface, consider the gift of a video card. Voodoo3 cards will clearly delineate every sinew and pimple on a computer game's hero -- all while making the game play faster, too. And they're really inexpensive, starting as low as $119.95 for the Voodoo3 2000AGP.

MacGifts

Macintosh owners are already salivating at Mac OS9. It's the ultimate Internet tool for your friends with Macintoshes (and Seattle has one of the highest Mac concentrations of any city in the world). Includes voice personalization and individual user allocation... in short, it's every bit as cool as any new Mac OS always is. Then give them Total Annihilation Gold Edition and Tomb Raider III , ready just in time for the holidays.

Kid Stuff

Kids love the newest games from Humongous Entertainment: Spy Fox 2 and Blue's Treasure Hunt. Know someone who loves animals? Get Catz 4 and Dogz 4, with the latest, cutest computer pals to live on your pals' virtual desktops. Babyz, too! And slightly older kids will enjoy the computer Encyclopaedia Britannica -- heck, anybody at any age would.

The Gift of Knowledge

Whether it's for someone who still needs to master his computer or for someone you know who's new to them, a Quid'·nunc class is a great way to turn your loved one into a power user fast.

Even More

Zip drives make a good gift, especially if you have a multi-gigabyte hard drive. For serious backing up, look at our recordable CD drives.

Little Bits and Bytes
Here's more stuff to consider:

  • Dilbert mugs and books
  • Computer voodoo pillow
  • Chocolate bytes
  • Mints in a mouse
  • Panic button (put it anywhere!)

Everyone Needs A System

Then there's the ultimate Christmas gift: A custom-built computer system. And if you're buying it for someone at home, don't forget to get a network card or hub to set up your own home network. Order by December 10th, and you'll be sure to have it in time for Christmas Day.

Classics

Did you miss out on any of last year's most popular items? Time was on your side! Many are now available at dramatically reduced prices! Perhaps you didn't want to spend $50 for Riven then...would $24.95 make you happy? How about Men In Black for just $9.95? Or 3D Landscape for just $7.95? So many great deals... come in and see! Q
