Thanks For The Fun & Memories!

Quid'•nunc had a great 6" Anniversary celebration during the weekend of November 11-12 and (even though it's been said many times before) a GRAND TIME WAS HAD BY ALL! Special thanks to everyone in the West Seattle community who dropped in to wish us well as we celebrated six years in business. Our friends at the Husky Deli provided the great food. Congratulations to A.L. Pricco of West Seattle who won our anniversary giveaway, a CDRW (very cool recordable CD-ROM drive; if you don't own one now chances are you will in about a year!).

Hard Drives & Upgrades

Generally speaking we're of the mind "if it ain't broke don't fix it". Meaning if your computer system works fine and you are happy with it don't go spend a lot of money upgrading the system just because you know someone who is constantly upgrading and likes to have the latest bells and whistles. On the flip side you should also know that computer parts do wear out or become obsolete with time.

One thing most average computer users do not seem to be aware of is that just the act of filling up your hard drive space with stuff can cause a system crash and the possible loss of ALL YOUR DATA! Yup, strange but true. It's not common, but we've seen it in our repair shop from time to time - a complete loss of data brought on by a full hard drive.

Our experience leads us to recommend these guidelines - 10%-20% free space for hard drives 4 GB or smaller. For all drives, at least 3 1/2 times the memory (RAM). With 64 MB of RAM, this means 224 MB of free space. Personally, once I get to 10% or less, I start thinking new (or additional) hard drive. The problem is that today's programs take so much more space. You can be feeling complacent with 500Mb of free space (after all, that was a large hard drive just four years ago) and then you load Microsoft Office and nearly half of it is gone. Two years ago a big game took up 25 MB of disk space. Today it is not unusual for a game to recommend 600 MB or more!

More Hot Gift Ideas!

CDRW
We are often asked, "What are good gift ideas for the average computer user"?Well, one of the hottest gifts you could give right now is a CDRW. Quid'•nunc has quality CDRW's for around $200 depending on make and model. The CDRW is a next generation CD-ROM drive that you actually RECORD files to (instead of just playing things back from a CD through the computer). It stores a huge amount of material (from 650MB to 700MB) so you can:

  1. Make your own music CD's from your own records, tapes or CD collection or from music you download from the Internet.
  2. Make your own photo albums.
  3. Use your scanner to save tons of business or family data to CD.
  4. Use as an "extra storage drive" and load all kinds of files into it.

NEW PRINTER
Today's high-resolution color ink jet printers (up to 2400 dpi) make a perfect gift and they are very inexpensive compared to just a few years ago. You can buy a quality Epson, Canon or Lexmark ink jet color printer at Quid'•nunc for between $60 and $200.

VIDEO CARD
If you know someone who uses their computer to play games, a perfect gift is to upgrade their video card so they can see the clouds in the sky or the moss on the dungeon walls with crystal clarity. Excellent video cards can be purchased for about $80-140 (and up).

 Class Schedule

There are no classes scheduled for December. Quid'•nunc classes      will resume after the holidays.

Seasons Greetings and have a Happy New Year!
